Client story · Boilermakers Lodge 146, Edmonton

The lodge that now tells other lodges about its own software.

Boilermakers Lodge 146 is the largest Boilermakers lodge in Canada. It runs membership, dispatch, credentials, contractors and dues on LabourConnex — a platform BKY spent five years building alongside the Lodge’s own staff. The Lodge asked us to tell other lodges about it. This is that story.

At a glance

A platform built inside a working lodge office.

Replaced Labor Power An aging system the Lodge had outgrown

LabourConnex is union management software built in Edmonton for labour organizations across Canada. It did not start as a product. It started as five years of work with Boilermakers Lodge 146 — the largest Boilermakers lodge in the country — replacing a system the Lodge had outgrown with one shaped around how the office actually runs.

The challenge

The Lodge had outgrown its software and knew it.

Lodge 146 was running on Labor Power, a system that had served it for years and had reached the end of what it could reasonably be asked to do.

The Lodge was not shopping for a membership database. It needed a platform capable of carrying the actual weight of a large Boilermakers lodge — member records, credentials and safety tickets, dues and arrears, manpower requisitions and dispatch, contractor remittances, reporting for staff and leadership, and secure self-service for members.

The obvious route would have been to buy four tools and wire them together. That fails for a reason specific to union operations: none of these functions is independent. A single change to a member’s status ripples through dispatch eligibility, credential validity, dues position, reporting and communications, all at once.

What the Lodge needed was one connected source of operational truth — not four systems that each held part of the answer and disagreed with the other three.

This is the same reason spreadsheets keep reappearing beside union software. They are where staff go to reconcile the things the software could not.

One member changes status. Here is what has to move with it.

  • Dispatch eligibility — whether they can be sent out tomorrow
  • Credentials and safety tickets — what they are still qualified to do
  • Dues, assessments and arrears — what they owe and what that affects
  • Contractor-facing worker lists — who a company sees as available
  • Reporting to leadership — numbers that need to be right the first time
  • Member communications — what they are told, and when

The approach

Five years. Built beside the people doing the work.

LabourConnex was in development for five years before it was anything you could call a product. That time was not spent in a boardroom drawing diagrams. It was spent with Lodge 146 staff, learning how a large lodge actually operates — including the exceptions, the workarounds, and the reporting nobody documents.

01

Learn the operation first

Lodge staff brought the operational knowledge: how dispatch really works, where the exceptions live, what has to reconcile against what. Nothing was designed before that was understood.

02

Build against real workflows

BKY translated that knowledge into secure, maintainable software — built around the Lodge’s procedures rather than asking the Lodge to adopt someone else’s.

03

Keep refining after go-live

Deployment was the beginning of the useful feedback, not the end of the project. Administrators and members used it, told us what was wrong, and it changed.

04

Turn it into a product

What began as one lodge’s platform became a SaaS product for labour organizations — carrying the workflows, security model and reporting that came out of real use.

Most union software is written first and adapted to unions afterwards. This went the other direction, designed around the needs of Boilermakers Lodges.

The solution

One platform. Three connected experiences.

Lodge 146 runs on three purpose-built portals that share one set of records. The office, the membership and the contractors are looking at the same information, which is the part that stops being true the moment you run more than one system.

For the office

Admin Portal

One environment for the day-to-day work of running a large lodge, from member records through to reporting for leadership.

  • Registrant and membership management
  • New membership application processing
  • Credentials, certifications and safety tickets
  • Apprenticeship information
  • Manpower requisitions and dispatch
  • Job steward appointments
  • Contractor management and remittances
  • Dues, assessments, arrears and tax receipts
  • Dashboards, reporting and communications

For members

Member Portal

Secure self-service access to the things members would otherwise phone the hall to ask about.

  • Payments and payment history
  • Outstanding charges and tax receipts
  • Employment and job activity
  • Credentials and safety tickets
  • Announcements, documents and forms
  • Lodge resources and contacts

For contractors

Partner Portal

Role-based access for contractors and approved industry partners — without opening the office system to them.

  • Manpower requisitions
  • Active-worker information
  • Self-managed company contacts
  • Remittance submission
  • Reporting and dashboards
  • Announcements, forms and training resources

The outcome

The Lodge runs on it. And it keeps changing.

Membership, dispatch, credentials, contractor activity and financial administration all run on LabourConnex at Lodge 146 today. The platform continues to evolve as the Lodge’s needs change — without the office drifting back toward a collection of disconnected tools.

One set of records

Membership, workforce, financial and communication activity work against the same data. Staff are administering the Lodge rather than reconciling systems against each other.

Members serve themselves

Payments, receipts, job activity and credential status are available to members directly, so the office spends less of its day on repetitive lookups.

Contractors come to the platform

Requisitions, worker lists and remittances move through a controlled portal instead of email threads and phone calls into the hall.

It is still being built

New functionality continues to come out of practical union requirements. The same team that built it hosts it, supports it and keeps developing it.

What we are not going to put on this page

A percentage. We could write one and it would look good here, but Lodge 146’s membership and operational figures are the Lodge’s to publish, not ours, and a number we cannot show you the arithmetic for is worth nothing.

Here is the proof we do have, and we think it is the better kind: Lodge 146 asked us to promote this platform to other lodges, and will take a call from any of them. Software that is quietly disliked does not generate that offer.

In the Lodge’s words

Ask the people who use it daily.

We would rather you heard this from Lodge 146 than from us. The Lodge has been part of this platform since before it had a name, and its staff are the reason it works the way it does.

“We were not looking for software that would make us change how the Lodge runs. Labor Power had taken us as far as it could, and what we needed was a system built around dispatch, dues and credentials the way we actually do them. BKY sat down with our staff and learned the work before they built anything. That is why it fits.”

Why this story matters

LabourConnex was not designed in isolation.

Most software platforms are built first and pointed at an industry afterwards. The workflows come from a product manager’s understanding of the sector, which is usually a reasonable approximation and occasionally a serious one.

LabourConnex went the other way. Its workflows, security model, reporting and implementation approach came out of five years of running a large Boilermakers lodge — and out of continuing to run one every day since.

For a lodge or local evaluating the platform, that produces something more useful than a testimonial from an unnamed organization:

A real lodge, running the platform in a real operating environment, willing to discuss the experience with you directly — including the parts that were hard.

See it for your own lodge

Every lodge runs differently. Let us show you around ours.

A demonstration is the fastest way to see how LabourConnex would handle your dispatch, your dues, your credentials and your contractors — with your procedures in mind rather than someone else’s.

About that reference call

Lodge 146 has agreed to speak with other lodges considering LabourConnex. We will arrange the introduction and then stay out of the conversation — ask them whatever you want, including what they would change.
