Twenty-seven years of building systems that stay built
BKY Technologies has been designing, building, and supporting business technology since 1999. The platforms have turned over several times since then, and so has the definition of what business software even means. What has not changed is the reason organizations call us: they have information their operations depend on, and they need it to be correct, current, and available.
One developer, one conviction: build around the data
BKY began in 1999 building Windows applications around data — systems that took in real operational information, made sense of it, and gave people something they could act on.
When .NET arrived and it became clear the future of business software was the browser, the honest assessment was that the founder was not a web developer and was not going to become a good one quickly. So we hired developers who already were, and the founder stayed where he was strongest: SQL Server, database design, analytics, and reporting.
The data layer is still the centre of gravity. Custom databases built for how an organization actually operates rather than how an off-the-shelf product assumes it does. Reporting that people make decisions from. Integrations between systems that were never designed to talk to each other.
The tools have turned over several times since 1999. The problem has not.
Three practices, one accountable team in Edmonton and Calgary
Each practice is staffed by people who do that work, rather than generalists stretched across all of it. Clients who engage more than one practice deal with a single team that answers for the whole outcome.
Managed IT Services
Full management of client IT environments, with operations teams in Edmonton and Calgary serving organizations across Alberta.
- Infrastructure, network, and cloud administration
- Security, backup, and business continuity
- Licensing and vendor management
- Day-to-day support with named, familiar technicians
Custom Software Development
Applications and databases built for organizations whose operations do not fit what is available off the shelf. We serve clients across North America.
- Custom database design and SQL Server development
- Web and line-of-business applications
- Reporting and analytics people make decisions from
- Integration between systems never designed to connect
Software Products
Software we own, host, and operate ourselves — built from problems we first solved as custom work, then made available to every organization facing the same problem.
- Hosted and maintained by the team that built it
- Purpose-built for membership-based organizations
- Configuration and onboarding handled in house
- Ongoing development driven by client operations
The three practices make each other better. The service desk keeps our developers honest about how software behaves once it leaves the build. The development work keeps our service practice current on platforms most providers only administer. Neither would be as strong on its own.
Built for workplace organizations and the industrial trades
Our client list to told us that the organizations we served best were membership-based workplace organizations and the industrial trades. Organizations with members to serve, records that have to be current, obligations that have to be met on schedule, and operational data no off-the-shelf product was designed to hold.
So we built for them. Not by narrowing what we do, but by going deeper where we already knew the work.
- Operational data, not brochureware Membership, dispatch, and eligibility records where being approximately right is the same as being wrong
- Domain knowledge that compounds We do not need the rules explained from first principles on the first call
- Depth added, nothing dropped Our generalist managed services and custom development clients remain exactly that — clients
Growing the products, custom database work, and Alberta coverage
We continue to invest most heavily where we have gone deepest: expanding our software products, and taking on custom database and application work for organizations whose operations do not fit the shelf.
Our managed services practice continues to grow across Alberta from our Edmonton and Calgary operations, and our development practice continues to serve clients across North America.
- Products, expanded Continued development of the platforms we own, host, and operate ourselves
- Managed services, extended Growing coverage across Alberta from two operating centres
- Custom work, sharpened Database, reporting, and integration engagements where the data layer is the hard part
How the work is organized
